And there was Dawkins scoffing about how the stars can’t cause events on earth. In other words he failed to refute Russell Grant. That is to say that the world’s most intelligent man was defeated by a very fat, very camp tabloid astrologer.

I’m sceptical about people falling over purely as a result of slipping on left-behind detritus. These are cobbled streets, slippery when wet. 99% of the time they are wet is due to rain.

I’m a bit sceptical, too, about the sums that I’ve heard quoted for street cleaning – up to £20k a year, sounds a bit steep to me.

I suggest a market solution. Instead of trying to stamp out this relatively harmless tradition, the Proctors levy a sum on everyone who is trashed. Say, £15 for clear liquids only, £25 for dairy, £50 for animal remains? Alternatively, trashing “licences” could be auctioned. The revenue used could be used to equip homeless people with cleaning equipment and pay them a generous wage to clean the streets. Everyone a winner, except the council cleaners who probably appreciate their summer overtime.

Why the Beeb or any other media outlet would fund him to junket around the world to quibble with rabbis is beyond me.

@Amber Everybody looks good in print because they have an EDITOR. Listen to him quibble. IRL he’s probably driven more to ‘faith’ just on the surface perception that atheists are unhappy meddling gits like Dawkins. Which most are not.

My main issue is with this whole “deeply offensive to homeless people” diatribe. On the basis of your argument, you should take Tesco and Sainsbury’s to task for throwing away food that isn’t bought on any given day. You should take to task anyone who is so offensive as to walk in front of homeless people listening to an iPod, or eating a burger, or wearing designer clothes.

What you’ve done is draw an arbitrary line somewhere unspecified, and said that anything beyond this line constitutes “offensive behaviour”. But drawing an arbitrary line is a wholly normative decision – it has no basis in any kind of fact. Homeless people are a tragedy, sure, but you are suggesting that any kind of outward statement that may imply you are wealthier and them is offensive. This is plain crap. You can’t simply say “no, it’s cos its food” – what’s the difference when all you’re talking about is money? If someone smokes a pack of fags, that’s £4.50 of potential food. If someone spills ketchup on their t-shirt and has to buy a new one at Primark, that’s £3 of potential food. Throwing a few eggs and some flour is about 50p of food.

People like you should get off your high horse and think rationally for a change. People are just having fun, and having the thought police come and try to stop it just makes it even more fun for those who do it. Do a cost-benefit analysis, and I’m fairly sure there’s only one winner.

Our generation has so much to offer, it’s just not all commercial bullshit.
